Servings 4 burgers

  • 2 cups grated raw peeled beets
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup cooked lentils
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic (or more if that's your thing)
  • 2 tsps dried thyme leaves
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Maggi seasoning to taste

  • Start by grating the beet. If you have a food processor with grater attachment this makes life easier.
  • Now add all of the other ingredients (yes it's that easy). Pulse chop everything until it's well combined. Don't forget to scrape down the sides to make sure everything is incorporated.
  • The mixture is very stick so wet your hands with cold water before forming the mixture into 4 patties about half inch thick.
  • Fry the patties by heating skillet with enough oil to cover the bottom. When the oil is nice and hot add the patties. I find you get the best results by cooking slowly, around 5 minutes per side. The aim is to seal the burger top and bottom but not burn them

Maggi seasoning gives a more meaty taste to these burgers, which might help if you’re cooking for a hungry caveman camper. Worcestershire sauce is also an option.
In fact, why not experiment with all sorts of herbs and spices? This recipe is good as it stands but can be used as the basis for some culinary experimentation.
